DUTIES:

: Sunday-Saturday, Primarily day shift, but may include evenings, midnight shifts and holidays

Duties:
This position is located in one of ! our Outpatient Pharmacy Sections within Pharmacy Service. The incumbent in this role represents a trained, experienced employee, thoroughly familiar with departmental procedures and guidelines throughout the entire Pharmacy Service. The incumbent selected for this position will be required to have the knowledge, ability, and skills to conduct the following job duties:
Prescription filling:
·
Using accepted Pharmacy practices, the pharmacy technician prepares outpatient prescriptions by obtaining proper medication or medical supplies in the proper strength and dosage form, determines the proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications and affixes the proper label for final check by a pharmacist.
These prescriptions may be for pick up or mail and may contain controlled substances.
Strict drug accountability will be maintained at all times.

Using accepted Pharmacy practices, the pharmacy technici! an fills outpatient prescriptions utilizing Automated Dispensing equipm! ent (i.e.. Optifill®, Scriptpro®) and software for final check by pharmacist.
During power outages, fills prescriptions manually.
·
Compounds internal and external preparations (i.e ointments, creams, solutions) for final check by a pharmacist. Required compounding documentation is completed to ensure proper monitoring of these products.
·
Fills orders for specialty products (i.e. ostomy items, dietary supplements, etc.) for final check by pharmacist.
Pharmacy Pick up Window coverage
:
·
Serves as first line communication between department and patient, nurse and/or other medical staff to serve the patientsÂ' needs either at the pharmacy pick up window or over the phone. Provides basic information regarding availability of drugs and dosage forms stocked in the pharmacy, location and status of previously requested refills.
·
Dispenses prescriptions to patients at the pick! -up window using approved patient identifiers to ensure accurate delivery.
·
Receives and processes prescriptions presented for refill at the Outpatient Pharmacy windows and received via incoming mail.
·
Answers phone inquiries.
Independently solves problems and answers questions.
Questions that require pharmacist intervention are appropriately directed.
·
Utilizes a wide variety of CPRS and VISTA menu options to enter data, receive data, or retrieve data to expedite patient care.
Procurement assistance:
·
Receives, checks, and properly stores medications and medical supplies.
Assists procurement technicians when assigned.
Mail processing
:
·
Wraps parcels of medication and medical supplies in preparation for mailing, taking care to assure package will not be damaged in shipment.
Attaches appropriate postage to meter! wrapped parcels utilizing UPS or USPS software.
Assures correc! t address label is affixed to package.
Controlled substance filling
:
·
Selects the appropriate controlled substance medication, counts the correct number of drugs, and labels as indicated for the prescription order. This also includes conducting required daily inventory, maintaining perpetual inventory of all controlled substances, and performing administrative paperwork.
Additional:
·
Satisfies the Joint Commission requirements by performing monthly inspections of assigned medication storage areas (i.e., clinics, inpatient medication rooms, internal pharmacy areas)
to ensure proper storage, labeling and dating of ward stock or pharmacy inventory.
·
Participates as a mentor or trainer to new pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, or pharmacy students as necessary or assigned.
·
At the Newington campus Pharmacy:
prepares sterile intravenous medication acc! ording to USP Chapter 797 standards.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Citizenship. Must be a citizen of the United States.

Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)
·
English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements. Must pass pre-employment medical examination.
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
De! finitions
Creditable Experience. To be creditable, the experie! nce must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with the scope of pharmacy technician practice.
Quality of Experience. To be creditable, pharmacy technician experience must be documented on the application and verified in an employment reference, or through other independent means.
Part-time Experience. Part-time experience as a pharmacy technician is credited according to its relationship to the full-time work week.
All applicants must meet the basic qualification requirements.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE
:
GS-6:
You must have at least one (1) year of progressively specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the following competencies: Experienced Inventorying and replenishing emergency carts without a second review. Ability to perform record keeping and inventory management of pharmacy inventory as well as collecting drug use evalu! ation data for quality improvement purposes. Operating and maintaining complicated pharmacy equipment. Able to compound and/or reconstitute oral or external medications (nonsterile) without a second review; this includes calculating and converting to proper weights and measures the amount of drug or solution to be used. After orders are reviewed by a pharmacist for therapeutic propriety, must have ability to review orders for technical accuracy and convert the order, if necessary, so that the item dispensed corresponds to the drug and dose ordered. (Core competencies are as follows: (1) Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action. (2). Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment. (3) Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents. (4) Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding wi! th aseptic technique for routine sterile products. (5) Knowledge of pol! icies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. (6). Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Requires standing for long periods. Requires frequent movement within work areas, regular and recurring bending stooping sitting, and stretching. Requires manual ! dexterity and acute hearing. Must be able to distinguish colors.
