Positions are located in the Medical Emergency Department

Tour of Duty: 2 positions will be primarily days , with rotation to evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

Incumbent is directed by the Registered Nurse to provide nursing care to meet the patientsÂ' physiological and psychosocial needs. The N/A helps each patient attain optimal physical, mental, and social well-being.
The activities assigned are more complex because of the condition of the patientÂ's physical, physiological and/or emotional status. The following examples of activities are not all inclusive, but reflect the kind of specialized activities that a nursing assistant GS-5 performs on a recurring basis in addition to the activities outlined for the Nursing Assistant GS-3 and GS-4.
Provides nursing care to acutely and seriously ill patients whose care needs include the use of complex techniques, skillful observations, and prompt recognit! ion of changes in condition, such as the comatose or unconscious patient, the acutely psychotic, or the patient who is moribund.
Initiates life saving measures when necessary in accordance with training and policy.
When assigned during the night tour the incumbent will also provide escort service.

Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS :
Specialized Experience: Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aide performing duties such as: Requires 1-year specialized experience equivalent to least GS-4 grade level.

  • Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
  • Support duties for diagnostic! and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating s! pecial medical equipment and apparatus.
  • Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.
  • Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.
  • 1 year equivalent to at least GS-4 or 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, if required.
Education : 4-year course study above high school leading to a bachelorÂ's degree with courses related to the occupation.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

  • Knowledge of a body of Standardized rules and skill sufficient to perform procedures requiring considerable tr! aining and experience to carry out nursing care and resolve recurring problems
  • Knowledge and skills to care for the adult during the middle years (40-64 years)
  • Knowledge and skills to care for the young old adult (age 65-74 years) to assist the patient to keep physically, socially active and to maintain peer group interactions
  • Knowledge and skills to care from the middle old (75-84 years) to assist the patient to cope with loss (e.g. hearing, eyesight, death of a loved one)
  • Knowledge and skills to care for the old, (age 85 and above) to assist the patient with self-care as required and with maintaining as much independence as a possible

Physical Demands: Duties require extensive perio! d of standing, sitting and walking. Working with patients requires regu! lar and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching and similar activities. The employee provides physical restraints for confused or combative patients as necessary. The incumbent must be physically able to lift to meet the physical standards of the position as evaluated by Employee Health. The incumbent is able to rotate to all tour of duty, weekends and holidays and may be reassigned to other nursing sections to meet our veterans patients needs. In an emergency, to meet patient care needs, the incumbent may be required to work overtime.
