The psychiat! ric / mental health nurse (psych RN) assists in the care of individuals suffering from mental illnesses, working with patients and their families and communities to assess mental health needs and provide personalized care as appropriate. Additional responsibilities include:
Assessing levels of dysfunction
Helping patients regain or acknowledge effective coping mechanisms
Preventing further disability
Providing information on preventative measures
Performing counseling
Teaching patients how to be self-sufficient and less reliant on others Psychiatric nurses may work with adults or children in both the facility and home health settings.
