Incumbent will provide services in specialized areas of radiologic technology listed below and/or general radiologic technology! services. The incumbent's principal responsibilities are to perform CAT scan procedures for the patients of the VA Medical Center, West Haven CT. Duties will include but or not limited to:

Transfer patients from stretcher or wheelchair to radiographic table

Prepare room, equipment and material needed for patient procedures

Prepares oral and injectable contrast and other chemical mixtures as necessary

Follow prescribed protocols required to perform procedures

Observes patients during procedures and reports complications or unusual events

Process films using automatic film processors.

Perform computer work and required forms associated with patient exams, credit of patient visits, complications and/or quality improvement activities of the Radiology Department.

Performs daily maintenance of head and body phantoms, such as changing water, cleaning and removing air bubbles, etc.

Administer contrast! material, under the direction of the radiologist, according to protoco! ls.

Check and make minor adjustments to equipment such as setting wedges, or changing adjusters

Maximize patient throughput by contacts with escort, ward secretaries, nursing personnel, etc.

Maintain a clean work area and adequate level of supplies within their assigned rooms at all times

Provide training to student radiographers and residents from affiliated programs and facilitates the attainment of established program objectives

Practice hospital safety, radiation safety, infection control and universal precautions at all times in accordance with age and/or gender specific departmental procedures

The incumbent is responsible for the quality assurance of the image (positioning/label/technique/network information) prior to transmission to the PAC's network. The incumbent assists housestaff in use of Auto Rad system and can also digitize films for the network and/or transmission to off site locations. The incumbent maint! ains the cassettes/plates/workstations (i.e.: primary/secondary plate erase, cleanliness of QA stations, etc.) as directed by the manufacturer.

Provide education to patients and their families on Imaging procedures

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R).

Experience or Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high schoo! l diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate ! or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), and certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in radiology.

Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-9: Applicants must meet the following requirements: 52 weeks (1 year) of Specialized Experience at the next lower level (GS-8).! Specialized Experience is defined as experience in the operation of diagnostic radiologic equipment under the direction of radiologists or their designs to produce radiographic studies used in the medical diagnosis and treatment of patients. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSA/ Job Elements and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSA/ Job Elements designated by an asterisk (*): 1. * Ability to balance the needs of the patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures; 2. Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information for the medical record, significant others, and health care providers; 3.* Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure; 4. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography; 5. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous skills, and universal precautions; 6. Knowledge of pre-p! rocedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.

Y! ou will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

1. Ability to balance the needs of the patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbin! g (steps, ladder, etc, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials. Eligible applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, without hazard to themselves or others.
